Convolution

For audio use convolution is a mathematical operation that represents the application of the transfer function of a linear time invariant system, for example a filter, to a signal. More details about convolution are available here:

The same mathematical operation is used also to simulate the series connection of two linear systems, for example cascading of two filters. The linear system transfer function is usually represented by the system impulse response.
