Hey, I am here cause I have been wanting to do stuff like this ever since I was a little kid! I am just now beginning to scratch the surface of what all of this stuff means! I have many questions too. I seem to have some trouble following the directions for some programs I come across on the net. Maybe someone could throw some hints my way?

I plan to help correct typos, grammar, etc in articles. I have wiki experience as an editor over at Wikipedia under the same user name. My Wikipedia user page.

Possible future article contribution

  • Just like at Wikipedia I plan to use my user page as an article forge. I will test this article out but I am not sure if it is room correction or not.

If you have Winamp and the Shibatch Super EQ plug-in then I have found a nifty way to input thousands of entries into the parametric EQ without single handedly typing in each and every single one of them! I created an EQ file with 60,000+ entries! How, you ask? Simple, with CoolEdit and OpenOffice (or equivalents) we will create an file that is formatted in the same manner that Super EQ requires!

What follows is a list of required software. If you have a different set of software than I then these instructions may still apply to you.

Software required:

  • CoolEdit Pro 2.0
  • Open Office
  • Winamp - I use version 2.91 because it is not crammed with stuff that I do not need.
  • Shibatch Super EQ - This may be the only required software. I am not sure if this plug-in will work with other media players. You can always try it and see!

Hardware required:

  • Microphone - I found an electret microphone lying around and twisted some wires onto it and then hooked it directly into my soundcard because money is something that I do not have!
  • Brain - I substituted a jar of peanut butter. I will leave the choice of brand up to you.
  • Stereo - I have a $50.00 'home theater in a box' that I purchased from Wal-Mart. Don't laugh! I am a home theater beginner without a lot of money, and besides it sounds surprisingly good! The tiny subwoofer is very deceptive. It will put out an amazing amount of bass.

Procedure

Open CoolEdit and choose 'Edit' from the toolbar and then choose 'New' from the drop down list. Then choose the highest sample rate that you can afford. Check the 'Mono' box and choose '16 bit' or '32 bit' whichever one your computer can handle.

Make sure that you are in the waveform editor mode and find the 'Generate' tab on your toolbar. Choose 'Noise' from the drop down list. I use white noise personally, but you may prefer to use pink noise. Heck, in the future I plan to try any kind of noise that I can get my hands on! Green noise, blue noise, brown noise, etc...

Highlight the entire wave that was generated and right click on it. Choose 'Transport to multi-track'. Next thing to do is set your microphone approximately in the same position that your head occupies at your preferred listening location. Go back to your computer.
