From DRC
Not a success story so far, but some rather encouraging trials...
Two years ago I reinvented my nearly forgotten time killer: Hifi. I had not changed my setup for nearly ten years, but last year we moved and my listening room shrinked significantly. This was a chance to think about a new setup. My old setup was really blown up. DIY 2-way speakers with Audio-Technology woofers and Thiel ceramic tweeters and a nice amp from Richard Gmein (RG 1,2). The sound was great, but there would'nt have been enough space in the new rooms.
For a year after moving my setup was a cheapo DVD and some even cheaper PC Speakers. The sound was annoying and last year I had the chance to hear a pair of Jordan Speakers (www.ejjordan.co.uk JX92S) and the decision was made for new speakers. The Jordan cover the whole range from around 60 hz to nearly 20khz. But after a while I missed the groundshaking bass of the Audio-Techs and I felt the need for a subwoofer. As the room is small and I'm not pushing the volume too high, I considered building a dipole. Ebay'd a cheap 15" Woofer with fitting TSPs and build a (half) Ridthaler Dipole around it. The sub goes way down, naturally and dry.
There are many rational people who get superstitious when it comes to hifi. DRC promises to bring back fun, as it promises significant improvements at the price of a 'voodoo CD liquid'. Let's see...
In the next weeks I'm going to document all my experiences with DRC and convolution, all improvements and drawbacks. As I have not a physical or technical background, this report might encourage some DIYers to discover new terrain.
Some pictures of my setup inbetween:
